Frozen weather cripples English Premier League

Posted by live cricket Friday, January 15, 2010

On Wednesday, Bolton fans were furious after traveling to London's Emirates Stadium for a match against Arsenal only to find out hours before it was supposed to begin that it was being suspended. Arsenal is refunding their money.

Though most stadiums in England are required to have underground heating, snow blanketed much of the country, and there was concern for fan safety traveling to and from matches. It was the most weather-disrupted weekend in the EPL since 1992.

The 72 college soccer players in Lauderhill for this weekend's Major League Soccer combine might be bundled up more than usual to deal with South Florida's unseasonably cold air, but at least they're playing. The same can't be said for many professional teams in England, which postponed matches this weekend because of heavy snow.

Among the English Premier League matches postponed were Chelsea-Hull, Liverpool-Tottenham, Stoke-Burnley, Sunderland-Bolton and Wigan-Aston Villa. All of the League 2 matches were called off, as were the Carling Cup semifinals.
